Ojo: The "Cholo Word Of The Day" is simply for fun. This is not an academic exercise, therefore I do not spend much time checking for espelling or grammatical errors. Most of the words are not only used by "cholos," but by many people in S. Texas - and their usage can vary. c/s

Cholo Word Of The Day - Naco

UPDATED

I found the comments on the word Naco very interesting. I've posted a couple of them here in case you don't regularly check out the comments section.

From Elena:

In México the word 'Naco' is a racisit term for an 'indio', thus not just 'indio' but almost like saying 'nigger'.

From Oso:

I've never heard that before. Are you sure? I use "naco" all the time. Mostly just joking around with my friends. But when I say it I'm picturing a skinny kid with black jeans and an AC/DC shirt on, not un Indio.

NaCo is also a clothing brand from Guadalajara. I'm proudly wearing by NaCo hoodie as I type this.

Oso: I think Elena may be right, even though I've never heard it used like that.

I can't help but wonder if this is in any way related to Elena's conversation about Gringo a while back.

Another Update:

From Elena:

I remember going to see "Y Tu mama tambien" with some Chilango friends of mine. They translated the word "naco" to "White-trash" my friend brought up and noted that it was actually the opposite of White trash. "Opposite" was the word he used. Opposite because "naco" is someone who is very indeginous and indegionus as if it is a bad thing.
My definition could be different in that my Spanish is Southern Mexican Spanish, not cholo spanish, not Spanglish, and not big-city-pesudo-northern-Mexcio Guadalajara Spanish.

From Cyndi:

you know, i think i see it as a lot more negative than oso does. i know people throw it around lightheartedly now, but it just has such negative class and racial connotations. have you ever heard "chúntaro" or "chunti"? i see it kinda like that...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naco, is not a cholo word, but often used by fresas to describe cholos. I think the word has taken on different meanings during the years. Naco was used to refer to poor people. Now it's often used to refer to tacky folks or losers (defined by the person using the word, claro).

I thought of the word again, because a friend of mine was making fun of somebody and said, they're not even naco, they're a naco wannabe. I thought that was hillarious.

Word:
Naco

Meaning According To DT:
tacky, loser, wannabe, outsider

Used in a sentence:
"Viste a el Toni? Se ve bien naco usando esos baggy pants y gold chain."

"Sabes que, porque no le dices eso a su cara, aver que pasa."

Translation according to DT:
"Did you see Antone? He looks really tacky wearing those baggy jeans and gold chain."

"You know what, why don't you tell him that to his face, and see what happens."

Now now, "Naco" is not as heavy handed as "Nigger" or "White Trash", it would be more like "Hick".

Blex, I stand by my comment it is just as bad as the word 'nigger', in my spanish. I did not grow-up in a chicano community nor in northern Mexico. In the Spanish of Mexico City and to the south of it, 'Naco' is a terrible racist term.

Elen, I am guilty of using that word, and many more.

I grew up in Acapulco, I have an idea of what you are saying.

I like your way of thinking, planning on starting a blog anytime soon?

In Mexico City, where I grew up, "naco" is not just racist, it's classist and a pretty offensive term. Basically, anybody who is dark-skinned and/or poor may be termed a "naco". I've even heard people refer to things as "nacadas" (i.e., someone who acts rudely does a "nacada", or something that looks tacky is a "nacada"). It's amazing the number of people I've heard use it in front of me when referring to someone else, but not dare use it to the person to whom they were referring. (It's considered that offensive!)

hi... i'm from monterrey, nuevo leon, mexico. naco is a person who has no taste whatsoever in style, conversation, etc. it's not a racist word and it's not for 'indios'. nigger means ignorant. naco is just a word that people uses, just like many others. your tone of voice and the way you say it may give this word a different meaning or understanding from the receptor.

I just want to be clear about this:
There's no exact translation for neither Naco nor Fresa.

Naco might be redneck, might be white trash, and might be tacky, and might be shabby, might be bad manners, since Naco does not necesarly is used as people adjective, it might be related to things, attitude, adornments and furniture.
It might be related to money, usually nacos are poor people, but there are rich people who are nacos as well. It does not related to race, though most nacos are mestizos, there are white people who are very nacos.

Fresa might be prep, might be snobby. Fresa usually never apply to things, attitude, adornments or forniture, but it might be used as well.
It does related to money, usually a Fresa is a rich people, it could be middle-class or higher. There are not poor Fresas.
Fresa does not relate to race, but most Fresas are white in Mexico. But you can be black or mestizo and be Fresa as well.

I'm from Monterrey, Mexico and in this city both words are extensively used.

One last thing, they're not opposite words either !
Paris Hilton is Fresa and a bit of Naca.

I hope this explanation left you a bit confused. That's as intended, as I wanted to be clear that's no exact translation for this words to use in English. There are many words that can be translated to English for Naco and Fresa depending on the context.

For the movie "Y tú mamá también", when Diego told Gael: "Te tenía que salir lo naco!!". The most approximate translation to english could be "You had to show your bad manners!!", but not enough, the act of spitting was certainly due his bad manners due his lower class condition. So, "you had to be a redneck!!", might be a little more approximate.

Me da cura that you all are trying ot argue over this shit in an intellectual debate. Elenamary, I agree with you. The word can be used to undermind people as lesser.

As whether this is cholo, fuck I grew in the barrio, got shot at, beat the shit out of people, and got the shit klcked out of me. Carge cuete y filero, and cruised con pinche Ramon Ayala y esa pinche cancion "Your my Puppet" bien chingon en mi Buik Regal bien tumbado and I can tell you, this word was not in my vocab, nor any of my partners in crime. Que se use ahora por pinche chavalitas wannabe cholos, ese es otro pedo. But from this veteranos perspective, es una palabra de los fresas, not cholos.

I just wanted to state that I recently had a meeting with the owner and founder of the clothing line, "Naco", Mr. Dean Schwartz, and he said the term is used lightheartedly and as to refer to the sort of trashy side of Mexican pop culture. So its like, "trashy" or "cheesey"...its not a bad thing, or racist!

"LOS QUE SE VISTEN COMO CHOLOS SON NACOS", ESTE ES UN EJEMPLO DE COMO SE USA LA PALABRA NACO AQUI EN MEXICO, TAMBIEN SE USA PARA LA GENTE QUE HABLA MAL QUE DICE "DIJISTES, VISTES, JUISTES", PERO EN REALIDAD SIGNIFICA NO MEXICA, O SEA, QUE NO ES DE SANGRE PURA MEXICANA Y ES MUY DESPECTIVO Y NO SE DEBERIA USAR, ES ASI COMO DECIRLE A UN GRINGO REDNECK, ASI DE FACIL.
